David Restrepo Amariles Elected to the Royal Academy of Belgium and Heading a New Chair
Barely a few months after being elected to the Royal Academy of Sciences, Letters and Fine Arts of Belgium, HEC Paris Associate Professor of Data Law & Artificial Intelligence David Restrepo Amariles became the holder of the school's new Chair, “The Future of Money,” created jointly with Worldline.
The academic year 2022-2023 was a busy one for David Restrepo Amariles, Associate Professor of Data Law and Artificial Intelligence at HEC Paris.
In December 2022, he was elected to the Royal Academy of Sciences, Letters and Fine Arts of Belgium, where he became one of the first 16 members of the Collegium and the Academy's Class Technology and Society. Created on the occasion of the royal institution's 250th anniversary, the Collegium brings together artists and scientists under 40. As a reminder, this Belgian honor is a bit of a homecoming for David Restrepo Amariles, since he obtained his Ph.D in Law from the Université Libre de Bruxelles, and his LL.M summa cum laude from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.
Then in May 2023, the professor, who has been teaching the course “The Future of Money: Innovations and Policy” since 2019, become the holder of the new Worldline Chair “The Future of Money,” created with the global leader in payment solutions. The aim of this three-year partnership between HEC Paris, the HEC Foundation and Worldline is to develop knowledge about payments through research and teaching, and to train future talent in the sector.
“I am very honored and excited to start a new journey at HEC Paris as a holder of the Worldline Chair on the Future of money. My vision is to institutionalize payments as an academic field at the intersection of technology, business and regulation,” David Restrepo Amariles said in a LinkedIn post.
Professor Restrepo Amariles will coordinate research on such pressing issues as innovation in payments and digital currencies, consumer trust and financial inclusion, payments infrastructure and technology ecosystem, regulation and policy around the digital euro, data analytics and new business models in the payments industry. A unique teaching certificate in the payments industry will be offered to final-year Masters, MBA, and Executive MBA students starting in spring 2024, to equip future leaders with tools to take the industry to the next step.
Worldline CEO Gilles Grapinet commented: “I look forward to sharing with [David Restrepo Amariles] our common passion for our fascinating, vibrant, yet little-know sector.”
